THE AVALON III

The liveaboard Avalon III offers guests the opportunity to dive in sites rarely seen by other divers with one of the most experienced liveaboard operators in Cuba, Avalon Fleet, a Cuban/Italian management company.

OUR CABINS

The 15 spacious and comfortable cabins can accommodate up to 30 guests in 10 standard cabins, 1 standard-plus and four air-conditioned suites with own private balcony. All cabins have private bathrooms and space to store your luggage.

AMENITIES

The dive deck offers a lot of space for dive gear and a dedicated area for underwater video and camera set-up. A large sun-deck, fantastic roof top open bar and hot tub all share beautiful ocean views.

FOOD ON BOARD

The Avalon III serves varied gourmet meals with a mix of international and Cuban cuisine and a selection of drinks that include fruit juices, soft drinks, iced water, iced tea, coffee and a limited selection of local beer and wine. Vegetarian and kosher meals are served on request.

DIVING WITH US

Cuba is a destination full of culture, white sugar sand beaches and pristine diving. It is a prime destination for shark diving- it is possible to dive with six different species: silkies, reef, lemon, black tip, great hammerhead and nurse sharks.

Between dives you can explore pristine beaches, marine lagoons and expansive sea grass meadows, mangrove forests and channels, deserted cays and sea turtle nesting beaches (in season).

DELUXE STATEROOM - MAIN DECK

Deluxe stateroom number 13 is located on the main deck. This deluxe cabin has two single beds in a side by side set up and a sea view window for natural light. The cabin has an ensuite bathroom with towels and soap provided and has individual air conditioning. There are bedside reading lights, storage cabinets and shelves and space to store luggage. EMBARKATION AND DEPARTURE

  • Pickups from Havana are in the early morning and come with an additional charge
  • Pickups from Santa Clara and Camaguey are in the afternoon
  • Check in on the boat is in the afternoon at 18:00

ARRIVAL AND DISEMBARKATION

  • Your last dives will be on the second to last day in the morning
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you respect the 24 hour no-fly time after your last dive!
  • The boat docks back in Jucaro at night on the last day
  • Check out and disembarkation is around 09:00 on the last day.

EXTRA INFORMATION

  • Please carefully check the requirements for travelling to Cuba.
  • If you are American, as individual, you are not allowed to spend days in Cuba, only arrival and departure night (one day before and one after the cruise).  These two days will be covered by the Authorisation letter released by Eco Outings - “ECO”.    (minimum must be 3 to be considered a group)
  • Transfers from / to Havana need to be reconfirmed.
  • The price for the transfer is usually around 75-100 USD pp/way and also depends on how many people are on the transfer. You will get a quote from the operator on request
  • For pick ups / drop offs from/in Havana, please keep in mind that pickups are restricted to a few hotels and not possible from private accommodations like private houses, Air bnb etc. If you should stay at such a place the operator will inform about the nearest possible pickup option
  • The transfer Havana-Jucaro takes around 7 hours
  • Transfers from/to Santa Clara airport (SNU) and Camaguey airport (CMW) and hotels in Santa Clara and Camaguey are usually possible, but availability and costs need to be reconfirmed by the operator upon request
  • If the operator can’t organize a transfer from Santa Clara / Camaguey on special trips, you would need to take a taxi to/from Jucaro port (it takes around 2,5 hours and the costs are around 150 CUC)
  • The pickup times will be reconfirmed only a few days before the trip starts (it depends on the arrivals of the other passengers as well)
  • Be aware that in Cuba it is not easy to arrange transfers flexibly. So if you have transfer requests from/to other locations than the above, you would need to take a taxi to and from the boat
  • You are not permitted to bring: GPS, drones or satellite phones into Cuba.

  • Enjoy diving in Jardines de la Reina, a protected marine park with a diversity of sea life from eels, rays and turtles in the muddy areas to the amazing biodiversity in the patch reefs
  • From the variety of sea life in the Mangrove fringes to the vast schools of fish and pelagics inhabiting the barrier reefs, this untouched marine environment is spectacular
  • Diving schedule is usually at the discretion of the customers following the instructor’s suggestions
  • Dive guides and crew are available every single minute.
  • Night dives available for a generous tip to your guide
  • Excursions to pristine beached for sunbathing
  • You can even snorkel with Crocodiles between dives

TRAVEL PROGRAM

DAY 1

  • Transfer to boat * please review logistic section.
  • Check in early afternoon
  • Meet the crew, welcome briefing, assign cabins, prepare equipment
  • Lunch is served on board
  • 5 hours trip to reach Jardines de la Reina

DAY 2 - 6

  • The day begins with a wake up call at 7:00 am, coffee/tea ready, breakfast at 7:15 am.
  • Diving starts at 8:00 am. Check dives with your group and dive guide.
  • After first dive, surface interval in one of the beautiful beaches.
  • Second dive, back to the boat for lunch.
  • The dive guide will help you arrange the time for your afternoon dives.
  • You can do excursions through the lagoon and mangrove channels instead
  • For a generous tip you can arrange extra dives 
  • Evenings are around the bar drinking cocktails and enjoying the sea
  • Around 8:00 pm, dinner is served, everyone gets together around the table
  • The staff will assist to plan your next dives, special requests or suggestions
  • It’s also the time to tell the dive guides where would you like to dive next day
  • For a generous tip you might be able to arrange night dives with your guide

DAY 7

  • Two dives in the morning.
  • Sailing back to Jucaro.

DAY 8

  • Last day of the trip
  • Breakfast
  • Check out from boat
  • Private transfer to Havana, local hotel or to departure airport

Diving logistics

  • Fast boats will take you to the diving sites, you will have the opportunity to explore different sites each day and enjoy the view of the mangrove channels, virgin beaches, birds and other exuberant fauna during the trips.
  • During the briefings, the dive guides will explain every detail of each dive, dive site highlights, correct behavior while diving with sharks.
  • Diving schedule is up to 4 dives per day
  • It is possible to book extra dives on request. Return to mainland is on Friday

About Jardines de la Reina diving

  • Depth: 16 - >130 ft (5 - >40m)
  • Visibility: 50 - 130 ft (15 - 40m)
  • Currents: Gentle to moderate
  • Surface conditions: Often calm, dive sites are not far from the liveaboards that are anchored close to lagoons
  • Water temperature: 73 - 84°F (23-29°C)
  • Number of dive sites: <30
  • Distance: ~125 miles (200 km) southwest of Havana (6 hours road transfer, plus 3 hours boat transfer)

Dive Sites

  • Black Coral I and II - These are the shark dives at the Gardens of the Queen and there are often lots and lots of sharks present. Silky sharks and Caribbean reef sharks, which are the most numerous, are not generally aggressive unless they feel threatened
  • Farallón - Considered to be one of the best dives in Jardines de la Reina. This site is a magnet for pelagics, large schools of grunts, jacks and silver tarpons. Turtles, rays, silky sharks and Caribbean reef sharks
  • Pipín - This is where the big boys play. Schools of jacks and even bigger schools of tarpons, numbering 10-50, cut jagged lines in the ocean. A lone, patrolling hammerhead may make a cursory inspection of the dive party before disappearing back into the blue. Groups of silky sharks (up to 12) arrive to view the scuba divers on their safety stop
  • Vicente - This is the Queens Gardens' drop off site characterized by its large vertical wall. Spectacular coral gardens welcome divers and vibrant coral interspersed with massive black coral colonies and all their inhabitants can be observed
  • El Galeon - An old galleon and a nearby fishing boat. The former has been around long enough to have been well and truly colonized by the sea
  • Anclitas - Hawksbill sea turtles are often spotted here, along with barracuda, stingrays, tarpons, Caribbean spiny lobster, tiger grouper, soapfish, hogfish, and saucereye porgy
  • Cabeza de la cubera - Meaning 'Snapper’s head', this site features, surprise surprise, many varieties of snapper, as well as grouper

CANCELLATION POLICY

What if I need to cancel my booking?

Your reservation request is obligation free and you can cancel anytime within the first 72 hours. During this time you can easily find matching flights and get answers from our reservations team to any further questions you may have. After you have confirmed and paid for your reservation, the following cancellation policy applies:

  • Deposits are refundable up to 6 months prior to your trip (minus 800$ handling fee p.p.).
  • Within 6 months of your trip, your deposit is non-refundable unless we are able to resell your spot.
  • No refunds are available for unused portions of packages.

In case of cancellation the refund will be transferred to your bank account, credit card or paypal account within 10 business days

BEFORE TRAVELLING

  • Make sure you meet the country's requirements corresponding to your nationality
  • Make sure your passport is valid at least six months after the date you plan to visit the country
  • Diving insurance is mandatory for divers of all ages on all of our trips: bring your certificate as proof
  • It is strongly recommended to have travel insurance that is appropriate for the type of diving holidays you are going to do
  • Check the electrical standards (such as which plugs are used) in your destination country before travelling and bring the appropriate adaptor if necessary.
  • The itinerary and the number of dives are indicative and are subject to weather conditions and conditions: safety is always first
  • All divers must provide their diving certification card
  • Diving computers are compulsory
  • Local rates, fuel surcharges, distance rates, port fees, etc. may change without notice due to changes in government policy, changes in the price of oil, etc. The changes are beyond our control and the increases must be paid if the boat requests them. We will endeavour to inform you of any changes as soon as possible. A change in these rates does not entitle you to cancel the trip.
