  • Big schools of amberjacks, different specimen of shark and tuna, dolphins, eagle rays, manta rays and pelagic stingrays, turtles and diving corey-sheerwater-birds.
  • There are impressive natural arches formed by ancient lava flows in some locations, whilst in others there are deep caves formed by several interconnecting chambers.
  • World War II shipwrecks lie on the ocean floor close to one island and near another the remains of 15th and 16th century shipwrecks can still be explored.
  • It means that divers can enjoy all aspects of diving – from coastal to wreck dives as well as cave and shark dives.
  • There are five kinds of sea turtle, over 24 different species of cetaceans and about 600 types of fish, including large schools of pelagic fish, several species of sharks, graceful manta and devil rays as well as friendly dusky groupers.
  • Beaked whales, sperm whales, fin whales, humpbacks, false killer whales, spotted, bottlenose and Risso’s dolphins, turtles and more are spotted from the surface May to October.  Whilst rare to see them when diving, it is not unknown to hear them.
  • The best time to dive in Azores goes from June to October, when mobulas, mantas and whale sharks come to the archipelago.
  • Santa Maria is the most south easterly island in the Azores where larger pelagic species are commonly encountered, most notably the devil rays at Baixa do Ambrósio where snorkellers are also welcome.
  • Explore the volcanic topography amongst a plethora of marine life from nudibranch to colourful wrasse, shoals of pelagic fish and crustaceans seeking shelter in the caves.
  • Experienced divers will enjoy challenging sites such as Ilheus das Formigas and Dollabarat Banks. Formed from volcanic mountains rising from the sea bed or deep narrow channels between the islands, pelagic encounters in strong currents are frequent in the summer months.
  • The Grey Island Pico. Rising dramatically from sea level to peak, Pico’s volcanic tip dominates the beautiful land and seascape of the central island group. The island’s steep slopes continue underwater, and it is these deep waters close to the island’s shores that make Pico the diving, whale and dolphin spotting destination that it is.
